Mount McKinley, Snowshoeing, Moose, and Glaciers

Iza flew all the way from McAllen, TX to visit Alaska! We had a great visit. She was like a good luck charm with clearing the clouds to see Mount McKinley, calling the moose and snowshoeing successfully!
Majestic mountains along the Turnagain Arm
Who needs a sunset when you can have a sunset volcano?
View from the top where we were snowshoeing. Zoom into the middle - in the far distance you can see Mount McKinley

Iza came to visit! We did not plan the jacket colors!

Jameson at Portage Glacier - you should have seen him pull a Bambi on the ice!

The closest ski resort - opens November 28th!

The many icefalls had ice climbers all along Turnagain Arm.

Action shot! He luckily loves snow!

My first snowshoeing trip - thanks for joining me Iza!

Out for a snowshoe with my buddy.

My second moose of Alaska!

Thanks for coming Iza! I had a great time!

UAA Seawolves Hockey

Chilling out at the UAA Seawolves vs Michigan Tech Huskies with my friend from Mexico, Iza, who's visiting for 4ish days. (No one has an excuse not to visit now!)
We happened to be seated in the Huskies section somehow. They have a better cheering squad anyway.

Igloo Warning

What do you think WeatherBug Elite is trying to get across? Caution: your igloo might melt in the raging sun?

Good night Eskimos?

It's a balmy 3°

And it begins! This is why a block heater and remote start are essential parts to living in Alaska!

Hike to Mt Gordon Lyons

I met some new friends today while hiking up Mt Gordon Lyons. Jameson had a blast with the other pups who were lucky enough to come along.
Meet some of my new outdoor group!

Hmmm... won't be able to see much from the top!

We saw some ptarmigans - they've almost fully turned white since the snow is here! They were the only wildlife of the day.

He would stop and lie down, waiting for me to catch up. He made me look slow!!

Our first hike in Alaska!

Still going up!

Jameson made friends with a gorgeous Tibetan Mastiff, Kesugi!

Once we got off the trail and returned to Anchorage, there was a sheet of ice on all the roads. Good thing I got my studded tires on a few weeks ago!

Whittier and Girdwood

For Dad's last day in Alaska (this visit anyway), he wanted to venture to Whittier. You either have to get to Whittier via boat or plane... or dual mode rail/vehicular tunnel. It runs Southeast on :00 and :30 and Northwest on :15 and :45, with the trains fitting in there somewhere when necessary. The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel is the longest dual mode tunnel in the United States. That being said, there is NOTHING in Whittier, except maybe the need to pick up cool people like you who take the ferry up to visit me!!
A glorious start to our day!

Entrance to the tunnel

You've now seen Whittier!
Girdwood, AK appears to be not much more than the gateway to Alyeska Resort, the closest ski resort to Anchorage.
See the eagle?

Dad flies out tomorrow morning at 1:30 am and will have to adjust to quite a time difference - 4 hours for EST and 1 hour for daylight savings time! So don't be surprised if he's sleeping at odd times when you call to see how his trip was!

Alaska Aces Time

Anchorage has its own AA Hockey Team, the Alaska Aces! Dad and I are enjoying the game tonight. Jeff has prepared me well for this Alaska experience.
