Surgery was a success!

I was out of surgery yesterday around 10:15 am and back to the recovery room where it took me quite a while to get out of my fog. I was home by noon 30 and set up shop on my couch where I expect to be for a while until I figure out how to get upstairs safely.

It has been quite an experience to be on the patient side. They performed both a sciatic and femoral nerve block to help with my pain and my body is having a difficult time compensating for this dead weight of which I have no sensory input. Dad has had to physically help me, especially up stairs so I don't fall on my face.

A couple more anatomy lessons:
- To block the nerve signal for my thigh and knee area (ACL reconstruction and removal of meniscus) they injected an anesthetic into my femoral nerve (green in picture below). This blocks sensation but also muscle so I can't use my quadricep until it wears off.
- To block the nerve signal for my side and back of my thigh, back of my knee and front of my shin (for my hamstring graft) they injected an anesthetic into my sciatic nerve (blue in picture below). This blocks sensation to eliminate pain but also muscle so I can't lift my toes or ankle up until it wears off. Scary feeling.

Once he got in there, the meniscus tear was worse than expected so he was unable to repair it and instead had to take part of it out. He was able to use my hamstring tendons (parts of them weaved together) to reconstruct my hamstring and used 2 screws to secure it in place.

I start PT on Friday! Time to take some pain meds and fall asleep.

  1. Wow, girl! We have missed the goings on a bit and I get on to catch up and….Glad you are doing well. Have fun with that PT and dealing with the pains of learning to walk again. You take care of you. HUGs from us.
